Sandefjord brief facts  

Medium size Norwegian town with appr 66.000 inhabitants at the south-east coast, on the western shore of the Oslofjord. 160 km coastal line including the islands. Typical summer resort area. Business activities mainly industry, trade, services and agriculture. Previously known for shipping, whaling and chemical industry. 

How to get there by public transport 

  • Local airport Sandefjord Torp (TRF) airport with direct national and international flights including Copenhagen. From the airport, shuttle to the airport railway station included in the train ticket. Train ride only a few minutes to Sandefjord main station. Alternatively taxi to downtown. 
  • Train connection roughly every hour from Oslo airport (2h) and Oslo city (1 ½ h). 
  • (Ticket vending machines or app “VY”).  
  • Ferry lines “Colorline” from Sweden/Strømstad directly to Sandefjord or Denmark/Hirtshals to neighbour town Larvik. 
  • The conference venue Park Hotell Sandefjord is within walking distance from the railway station and the harbour. 

Touristic 

  • The whaling museum: Today, whaling is controversial but until its discontinuance in the 1960’s, whaling in the South Sea at its peak offered employment to thousands and significant growth of this region, especially within shipping and chemical industry. 
  • Midtåsen Sculptural Park and former estate of shipping magnate Anders Jahre, now open to the public.  
  • Maritime museum, City museum with genuine whaling ships. 
  • Gokstad Muriel Mound viking grave and memorial. The Gokstad viking ship is placed in Oslo, but another one may be seen in nearby Tønsberg: The entire area was a significant center during the Viking age.
