FLAC 3D – Rock mechanical modelling

An introduction to the numerical software FLAC 3D and practical training (held in English)
Get introduced to FLAC 3D by Itasca, the software known for its capabilities to model and analyze complex rock mechanical problems.
Course description
Underground projects are getting increasingly more complex in terms of their geometry and the potential interaction with nearby structures above and below ground, and there is a rising demand to be able to verify design and performance expectations at an early phase of a project.
In this practical course, two lecturers from Itasca will introduce us to the newest version of FLAC 3D, and provide guidance during practical training using this powerful software. All attendants must bring their own laptop computer, from which the program will be run through a network license. There will be handed out written course material.
The following aspects will be covered during this two full day course:
- Introduction to FLAC 3D
- Theoretical background
- FLAC 3D – setup, user interface, practical training
- Model generation, mesh generation, input data etc.
- Discontinuities/joints
- Numerical modelling of tunnels and supporting elements
- Mining applications – examples
Some prior knowledge/experience with numerical modeling is recommended, but not a requirement. The Norwegian Group for Rock Mechanics (NBG) welcomes you to an interesting and practical 2-day course in Trondheim, Norway.
FLAC3D System Requirements
All attendants must bring their own laptop computer, with these system requirements:

- Operating System: Windows 7 or later (with the latest service packs installed)
- Hard Disk: 500 MB
- Processor: Dual core CPU (2 GHz)
- Memory (RAM): 1 Gbyte
- Video Card: HD graphics card, 800 x 600 pixels, 32-bit color palette, OpenGL 1.3 or higher
Recommended System
- Operating System: Windows 10 Pro (with the latest service packs installed)
- Hard Disk: 2 TB, 7200 rpm or better
- Processor: Intel Core i7 CPU (3 GHz) or better
- Memory (RAM): 16 Gbytes or better (large models may require more memory)
- Video Card: HD graphics card, 1024 x 768 pixels, 32-bit color palette or better, OpenGL 1.3 or higher
